History of the area
Sebastian got its start in the 1870’s as a small fishing village, officially founded in 1882 and then renamed Sebastian in 1884. After incorporating in 1923, the wreck of the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet was discovered just off shore and is how this whole stretch of coast became known as the Treasure Coast. We’ve watched this fishing town grow into the community it is today, and we’re proud to serve it with the same straightforward, local approach.
Sebastian Inlet State Park is where the Indian River Lagoon meets the Atlantic ocean. With a world renowned surf break, premier saltwater fishing, snorkeling, diving, hiking and two museums – McLarty Treasure Museum and Sebastian Fishing Museum! Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge sits just offshore and became the first National Wildlife Refuge in the United States 1903. The Indian River Lagoon’s stunning waters are great spots for kayaking, boat tours, dolphin tours and manatee sightings.
Sebastian Highlands is one of the city’s main residential neighborhoods. Development started in 1959 on mostly single-family homes nestled in quiet, family-friendly enclaves. We love the vibes of Sebastian Lakes and Sebastian River with it’s relaxed river feel and tight knit community. Hidden gem, Roseland sits just North and is often mentioned alongside Sebastian.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on my property in Sebastian? No, dumpsters on private property generally don’t need a permit. Right-of-way placement (street, sidewalk) requires a Right-of-Way Permit from the city. Commercial properties keeping a dumpster on site longer than 60 days typically need a permit regardless of container size. I live in Sebastian Highlands, any extra rules? Nothing beyond standard city permitting that we’re aware of, but if you’re in an HOA-governed subdivision within Sebastian Highlands, it’s worth a quick check on placement/visibility rules before delivery day.
