History of the area
Cape Canaveral has been called home for over 12,000 years, but stayed largely unsettled for centuries after Spanish explorers named it in the 1500s. A lighthouse built in 1848 finally brought permanent settlers, and the city officially incorporated in 1963, growing up right alongside the space program that put it on the map. We’ve watched this stretch of barrier island fill in with condos, hotels, and port traffic and we’re built to work in tight, coastal spaces most haulers aren’t set up for.
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is the area’s biggest name-recognition landmark, right next door to Cape Canaveral! Cape Canaveral Lighthouse was built in 1848 and helped to spur on a permanent settlement. Exploration Tower which hosts seven floors of exhibits on the area’s maritime and space history, they even have an observation deck over Port Canaveral. Port Canaveral is world renowned as one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, driving the area’s commercial and hospitality activity. Jetty Park is an iconic fishing pier and oceanfront picnic spot, which is quieter than the main beach areas that tourists love. Canaveral National Seashore has 24 miles of undeveloped beach just north of Cape Canaveral.
The Villages of Seaport, a stunning gated beachfront condo community, that has pools, tennis courts and various clubhouse amenities. Avon by the Sea is one of the most popular residential pockets. It’s a mix of condos and residential homes east of A1A. Ridgewood Avenue corridor is the main drag running the north-south residential/condo strip along the length of the city.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on my property in Cape Canaveral? If the dumpster sits entirely on private property, a permit generally isn’t required. Work involving the City’s right-of-way does require a permit, Cape Canaveral’s Permitting Office handles applications online and can be reached at permits@capecanaveral.gov. (We’ll always tell you upfront if your situation needs one.) I live in a condo or HOA community, do I need approval? Almost certainly worth checking first. Cape Canaveral is dominated by condo and HOA communities, many of which have specific rules about dumpster placement, parking lot access, and how long a container can stay. Need help navigating this step? We can help!
