History of the area
Merritt Island’s history goes back to a 1600s Spanish land grant that provided property to early citrus pioneers in the 1820s, and small communities founded by freed slaves after the Civil War. Everything changed in the 1950s and 60s as NASA’s growth turned this quiet barrier island into Space Coast territory. In 1963 a huge stretch of the island became the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, protecting the land right next to Kennedy Space Center. We’re proud to serve this unique stretch of Brevard, between the lagoon and the launch pads.
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge consists of 140,000 acres, a manatee observation deck, Black Point Wildlife Drive (7-mile auto tour), visitor center boardwalk plus an incredible 310+ bird species. Legendary Kennedy Space Center sits directly adjacent and shares the refuge as a buffer zone. Part of Brevards defining feature, the Banana and Indian Rivers, the two waterways bordering the island.
North Merritt Island is more low key, quieter and more rural northern end near the Refuge. Tropic, Courtenay, Georgiana are the vibrant historic named communities on the island. You’ll find Central Merritt Island, the main residential and commercial core, right along the Merritt Island Causeway.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on my property on Merritt Island? Since Merritt Island is unincorporated, permitting runs through Brevard County, not a separate city government. Private-property placement generally doesn’t need a permit; right-of-way placement requires a Brevard County right-of-way permit through the Public Works Engineering program. I’m in an HOA community, any extra rules? Possibly, check with your HOA on placement and visibility rules separate from any county permit requirement

Give us a call or send us a text!

Not only will we answer the phone, but we promise to be clear, upfront and honest when we answer your questions. Our office works hard to know the intricacies of Brevard’s many vibrant communities; from HOA’s to permitting we’ve researched it all and we’re happy to help!
