History of the area
Melbourne Beach got its start in 1883 as a pineapple plantation. Planted by a retired Union Army officer who bought up the land for a $1.25 an acre, it stayed a slow, sleepy stretch of barrier island for decades before formally incorporating in 1923, making it Brevard’s oldest beach town. That unhurried, small-town character never really left. We’re proud to serve a community that’s held onto it.
Ryckman Park is a well maintained park on Ocean Ave. It has playgrounds, bocce, basketball, tennis courts, gazebos, and a long pier out into the Indian River that is popular with locals or fishing and sunsets. Serene Sebastian Inlet State Park anchors the town’s southern end. With beaches, jetty fishing, surfing, McLarty Treasure Museum (1715 Spanish treasure fleet) and Sebastian Fishing Museum, there is plenty to chose from. Ocean Avenue district is home to the legendary Melbourne Beach Market, Rockies cafe and a surfing institution – Catalyst Surf Shop.
Ocean Avenue corridor is the town’s main drag and a small commercial and dining strip. Riverside is a quieter feel, more residential streets and close to Ryckman Park.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on my property in Melbourne Beach? No, private-property placement generally doesn’t need a permit. Right-of-way placement (street, sidewalk) requires a permit through the Town’s Building Department. My street is narrow or tight, can you still deliver? Yes, we’re experienced with tight barrier-island streets and limited parking. Just flag your specific access situation when booking.
