History of the area
Historic Rockledge, FL was founded in 1887, and is the oldest incorporated city in the county, named for the coquina rock ledges that line the Indian River. Citrus and early tourism built this town before most of the Space Coast existed, and that riverfront, old-Florida character is still here today. We’re proud to serve the town that started it all.
Tropical Rockledge Gardens opened in 1962 and is the oldest garden center in Brevard County, with demonstration gardens, butterfly gardens, workshops, plant sales and a wedding venue, they have it all. Famous for our coquina rock ledges on the Indian River, you can see some of the rock formations the city is named for. Named for an ornithologist couple who settled here in the 1950’s, the Helen and Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary has 140 acres preserved as a wildlife refuge
Old Rockledge and Riverside are the historic core along the Indian River and are sprinkled with coquina cliffs and Gilded-Age-era homes. Central Rockledge is the beautiful main residential and commercial corridor.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on my property in Rockledge? No, private-property placement generally doesn’t require a permit. Right-of-way placement requires a permit from the City of Rockledge’s Engineering Division. My home is in the historic riverfront area, any extra rules? Possibly, given the age and character of some Old Rockledge properties, worth a quick check with the Building Division if your property has any historic designation.
