History of the area
Cocoa got its start around 1860 as a small fishing settlement on the Indian River, and its name has an oddly sweet origin story. The town’s original name was rejected by postal officials for being too long, so locals renamed it Cocoa in 1884. The city incorporated in 1895 and has grown into the Historic Cocoa Village you see today, cobblestone streets, antique shops, and a genuine small-town feel just minutes from the Space Coast. We’re proud to serve this town the same straightforward way we serve everywhere else in Brevard.
Historic Cocoa Village is a Florida Main Street Program recognized downtown district, cobblestone streets, antique shops, art galleries. Stunning Porcher House is a historic landmark home in the Village. Delightfully ours, the Cocoa Village Playhouse hosts live theater and many excellent productions with “Broadway on Brevard.” The Cocoa Riverfront Park sits directly on the Indian River and has an amphitheater, playground, splash pad and of course, stunning Indian River views. Always a fun time, Cocoa Village Marina is home to the elegant Indian River Queen cruise boat. Maybe you’ll see a dolphin?
Historic Cocoa Village is the heartbeat of the downtown corridor, there are many older homes, nestled together with mixed use lots also zoned commercial. Riverfront/Indian River-adjacent is mainly a waterfront residential community near Riverfront Park.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on my property in Cocoa? No, dumpsters on private property generally don’t require a permit. Right-of-way placement requires a permit from the City of Cocoa, available through their online CitizenServe portal. My lot is small/tight, especially near Cocoa Village — can you still deliver? Yes, we’re experienced working older, tighter downtown lots. Just let us know your specific site constraints when booking so we can plan placement accordingly.
