History of the area
Fellsmere was founded in 1911 as an agricultural town built on reclaimed muck farmland, and it holds a real piece of American history! In 1915, it became the first place in Florida and South of the Mason-Dixon Line, where women legally voted. Today it’s better known as the Frog Leg Capital of the World, home to one of the state’s most beloved small-town festivals. We’re proud to bring the same straightforward, local service to this corner of Indian River County.
Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival — annual January festival, two Guinness World Records (most frog legs served in a day, largest frog leg festival in the world). The city’s single most famous identity. The Marsh Landing Restaurant is housed in the restored 1920s Fellsmere Estates Building. Delicious Old-Florida cuisine and live bluegrass make it a date night treat. Fellsmere Union Church and Marian Fell Library are two historic downtown landmarks. Beautiful St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park is 60 miles of natural preserve, manatees, red-cockaded woodpeckers and agile Florida scrub jays. Tranquil Blue Cypress Lake is one of the world’s largest osprey nesting sites as well as hosting major bass and crappie tournaments and a historic fishing hot spot.
Verdant Fellsmere is cozy, eclectic and close knit. Indian River Farms is the main named residential area associated with the city.
Do I need a permit to put a dumpster on my property in Fellsmere? Dumpsters on private property generally don’t need a permit. The city’s Building Division (22 S. Orange Street) handles permits for right-of-way placement and most construction-related work. You can call (772) 571-1616 to confirm your specific situation. Are there different rules for agricultural or larger rural properties? Possibly, given Fellsmere’s land-use mix, it’s worth a quick check with the Building Division if your property is zoned agricultural rather than standard residential.
